Cartridges Direct is proud to be helping hundreds of businesses around the world with their ink cartridge recycling efforts. Approximately 800 million ink cartridges are used every year and less than 300 million of them are recycled. It’s a big problem that will only get bigger unless businesses start implementing recycling activities to prevent used ink cartridges from ending up in landfill sites.

Unrecycled Ink Cartridges Cause A Lot Of Problems For The Environment

It takes between 400 to 1000 years for ink cartridges to biodegrade. Because there are so many being produced every year, it will just continue to consume space in landfill sites.

Ink cartridges contain plastics, metals and inks that are harmful once they are discarded into the environment. Some of the chemical elements in the ink cartridges contain carcinogens, which can lead to serious health issues such as cancer. When they are exposed to air and rain on landfill sites, the chemicals can contaminate waterways and wildlife. It can then impact the food chain to the point where it affects the food consumed by humans.

Most people think that it won’t affect them in anyway. However, residents in the Chinese city of Guiyu face the realities of their grim decision every day. The city, which imports and processes e-waste items such as used ink cartridges have contaminated their land and waterways to the point where food cannot be grown and the water cannot be consumed. In fact, all of the town’s water is imported from neighbouring towns.

So How Can You Make A Difference?

Small actions can make a big difference over the long-term. Rather than try to implement your own scheme, take advantage of ethical recycling schemes that are already in place. Cartridges Direct provides this as a free service to all of their customers. This way, you can have the confidence that your used ink cartridges won’t end up in landfill sites.

Don't Just Throw Your Cartridges In The Usual Garbage Or Recycling Bins.

If you discard your used ink cartridges in these bins, they will always end up in landfill sites. Many people place their used ink cartridges in the recycling bin believing that they are actually doing the right thing. However, the centres that usually process the recycled items aren’t equipped to recycle ink cartridges. They are then sent to landfill sites and thus continue to contribute to landfill pollution.
