Some aspects of business are simply black and white. But it still needs to be versatile, fast and perform many tasks simultaneously to be truly productive. And the HP LaserJet Pro MFP M227FDW is aimed squarely for users who have a need for a purely monochrome MFP, but they still need a printer that is more than just a printer.

Using the latest HP JetIntelligence the unit is smaller, faster, prints more pages per cartridge and is more energy efficient than before. With the ability to print, scan, copy, fax and print both sides of the sheet of paper automatically it has all the versatility that today’s business environment demands.

Designed for small workgroups ranging in size for 1 to 5, the HP LaserJet Pro MFP M227FDW is quick off the mark with a first page out time of 6.8 seconds from ready and 8.7 seconds from the energy saving sleep mode. From then on it prints up to 28 A4 pages every minute.

Print resolution is at 1200 x 1200 dpi in best mode and 600 x 600 dpi in normal (draft) mode, producing high quality prints as expected from a laser printer.

As always getting ahead in today’s business environment relies on being well connected. Today it’s no longer who you know but rather how many devices can access a printer. In this respect the HP LaserJet MFP M227FDW has an array of connectivity to allow a multitude of devices to access it.

On the front is a Hi-Speed USB 2.0 port to allow easy access for material on a USB stick to be downloaded.  Also on the front is a Near Field Connector (NFC) allowing various mobile devices such as Smartphones, tablets, notebooks etc to be paired with the MFP. This permits direct printing from the paired device.

The rear panel has the other connections; a Hi-Speed USB 2.0 host port, an Ethernet 10/199 port to hardwire to a network, one phone line in and a phone line out.

In addition to the hardwired network connection the HP LaserJet Pro MFP M227FDW incorporates Wi-Fi connection for direct and mobile printing.

Mobile printing allows you to access the printer, and download print jobs, from anywhere.. Using HP e-Print, when out in the field, simply send the job to the printer in the same way as you send an email. It also supports Apple AirPrintTM 2.0 to give access from an I-Phone .or I-Pad.

Direct instruction input is from an adjustable 10.9 cm touchscreen with swipe and gesture capability to give access to a range of business Apps as well as instruction icons

Information security is of increasing importance to businesses these days. An unsecured printer, because it is part of your network, can provide an entry point for a malicious attack on your system. The HP LaserJet Pro MFP M377dw offers a full suite of security protection. HP Pro printers offer powerful security for any office, with features that can detect and stop an attack as it happens. The MFP is protected, by embedded software, from boot up to shut down.

There are two paper trays; one has a capacity of 10 envelopes or 10 extra sheets whilst the main paper tray has a capacity 250 sheets or 10 envelopes. Both are accessed from behind a fold down front panel.

The largest paper tray supports A4 page size as well as A5 and A6. It can accommodate up to letter and legal sized paper as well as envelopes. Media weights range from 60 gsm up to 163 gsm which ranges from bond up to cardstock.

The output tray has a capacity of 150 sheets.

Both the copier and scanner functions are fed by both an Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) and a flatbed platen for bound documents. The ADF has a capacity of 35 sheets and takes an original sized from 148 to 210 mm up to 215 x 355 mm. The maximum scan area is 215 x 297 mm.  It can scan colour originals converting them to grey scale with a range of up to 256 shades. The resolution is 300 x 300 dpi from both colour and mono originals when fed from the ADF. The flatbed produces a higher resolution scan of 600 x 600 dpi from a colour original and up to 1200 x 1200 dpi from a mono original.

It scans at the speed of up to 15 A4 pages per minute. The scanner can also digitally send the output either to email or network folder in both PDF and JPEG formats. Input is from the front control panel, scanning via HP LaserJet Software Scan or TWAIN-compliant or WIA-compliant software.

The copy can be set to produce up to 99 copies and has reduce or enlarge settings from 25% to 400%. Using the touchscreen the number of copies can be set as well as a range of copy settings. It supports double sided copying at up to 18 cpm.  For single sided copying the speed is 28 cpm at a resolution of 600 x 600 dpi with both black test and black graphics.

The fax function permits a wide range of options including a speed dial memory of up to 120 numbers and a fax memory of up to 1,000 pages. Other features include delay send and a junk fax barrier. It also supports a telephone handset.

With a resolution of 300 x 300 dpi it the transmission speed is approximately 3seconds per page.

Energy consumption is an important consideration and the use of HP JetIntelligence laser technology reduces operating costs. The lower melt point of the toner means that the fuser wire doesn’t need to reach such a high temperature as before. This means that the unit uses only 475W during printing and 4.5W in Ready Mode.

The HP LaserJet Pro MFP M227FDW uses an HP 30A Original LaserJet toner cartridge. This has a page yield of up to 1,600 pages. For even greater economy the HP 30X Original LaserJet toner cartridge will print up to 3,500 pages.

The unit has a small footprint measuring just 407 cm wide and 407.4 cm deep. The overall height is 311.5 cm and it weighs 9.1 kg.

For those who don’t need a colour laser MFP but do need the versatility and features in a mono printer the HP LaserJet Pro MFP227FDW is worthy of consideration.
