HP Laser Jet Enterprise M552dn Review

June 29, 2017

Reducing operational overheads is key to being a successful business and, in the area of business communication a good place to start is in the area of business printing. The key areas to look are in pooling resources, operational costs and output. In all these areas the HP LaserJet Enterprise M552dn offers significant benefits.

It uses the latest technology to give high output at lower operating than others in its class. It’s fast with a first page out time of just 9 seconds from Sleep Mode and a print speed of up to 35 pages per minute. It’s also economical with low energy usage and automatic duplex printing as standard to reduce paper consumption and a high page yield per cartridge it can significantly reduce operational costs over comparable laser printers. The printer is designed for integration into workgroups of between 5 and 15 with the print speed, paper handling and connectivity to meet their needs. It also uses a lower footprint to save on valuable work top space.

To achieve these results the HP LaserJet Enterprise M552dn uses the very latest in toner technology – HP JetIntelligence. This system uses a toner with a lower melt point than before. Energy consumption is reduced because the fuser wire does not need to reach as high a temperature.

The benefits of HP JetIntelligence

This results in lower energy consumption, higher page yields and a smaller footprint for the printer.

Automatic two sided printing

Paper usage levels can be significantly reduced by using both sides of the sheet. Although automatic double sided (duplex) printer is an increasingly common feature on printers, it usually takes longer to print on the second side and slows down the print job. However a piece of clever technology means that the HP LaserJet Enterprise M552dn takes no longer to print both sides of the sheet than to print one.

Duplex Printing

By printing on both sides of the sheet can save up to 30% of the paper used by printing just one side. The print speed of 35 pages per minute on just one side is exactly the same if you print on both.

Paper Handling

Two fully adjustable paper trays come as standard. The first tray has a capacity of up to 100 sheets and Tray 2 allows a further 550 sheets to be loaded to suit the workload. An optional third tray can fit a further 550 sheets, giving a total capacity of 1200 sheets. The output tray has a capacity of up to 250 sheets.

Connectivity is a key requirement in business printing, and the HP LaserJet Enterprise M552dn fits the bill in this area as it is a pooled resource for up to 15 users. The main data transfer method is via an Ethernet connection. All these models have an Ethernet 10/100/1000 LAN connection as standard. They all have an additional USB 2.0 port and an easy access USB 2.0 port for printing directly from a flash drive without going through a computer. It can be further optioned with the HP Jetdirect 3000w NFC/Wireless Accessory for printing from mobile devices.

Instructions to the printer are by way of a 4 line graphical display and a 10 digit keypad.

It also gives Mobile Printing Solutions through HP e-print Apple AirPrintTM and are MopriaTM-certified. It is accessible from the HP e-print app for Android, IOS and Blackberry for those in the field or out of the office.

The printer has a base memory of 1GB.

High connectivity can sometimes give rise to network insecurity as a printer can be used as an access point to the network putting valuable data at risk from theft or manipulation. Not so with the HP LaserJet M552dn, however. It offers the highest level of security in its class as standard.

HP JetAdvantage Security Solutions

So no matter who can access the printer the valuable data stored on the network is shielded from unauthorised access or prying eyes.

Lower Energy Usage

Climbing energy costs are playing an increasing part in effective productivity. The technology behind the HP JetIntelligence toner system gives significant savings in this area. A lower melt point for toner means a lower temperature for the fuser wire and that means lower energy consumption. When printing this printer uses 569W and 33.6W in ready state. The default time from Ready to sleep time is 1 minute, after which the printer uses 3.95W of energy. The energy usage is claimed by HP to be the lowest of any comparable laser printer.

Low Cost per Page

Operating costs are not just incurred in energy consumption and paper costs but in cartridge costs. The HP LaserJet Enterprise M552dn uses the HP 598A toner cartridge range. The HP 508A Black gives a page yield of up to 6,000 pages. The HP 508A Cyan, Magenta and Yellow cartridges can print up to 5.000 pages before replacement. For even greater economy the printers will also accept the HP 506X toner cartridge range. These High Yield cartridges give a page yield of up to 12,500 pages in black and up to 9,500 pages for the Cyan, Magenta and Yellow.

To maintain and ensure maximum productivity the HP LaserJet Enterprise M552dn is eligible to be a part of the CartridgesDirect AutoMATE TM automated Ink Replenishment Program to ensure that the HP LaserJet Enterprise M552dn printer never runs low on toner no matter the workload and maintains its productivity.
