Print Productivity - HP LaserJet Pro MFP M428FDN

For workgroups ranging in size from 3-10 the HP LaserJet Pro MFP M428 gets the business done efficiently. Printing only in black with one toner cartridge, the LaserJet Pro MFP M428 delivers high quality print speeds of up to 38 pages per minute (ppm) on one side. Cost-efficient automatic double-sided printing will print both sides of the page at the speed of 34 ppm. This effectively halves the paper usage in a multi-page document whilst not throttling the printing speed. What’s more, the M428fdn does not take long to get up to speed either with a first page out time of 6.3 seconds from the ready state.

The high-resolution printing of 1200 x 1200 dots per inch gives very good quality printing

Being a mono printer there is only one toner cartridge required; the HP 76 series black Original LaserJet Toner Cartridge. There are two cartridges in the series, the HP 76A and the HP 76X toner cartridge. The HP 76A comes with a page yield of up to 3,000 pages and for even more economical printing, the HP 76X delivers a page yield of up to 10,000 pages.

Both toner cartridges use HP Jetintelligence toner and the new HP Ecosmart black toner. The combination of HP Jetintelligence and HP Ecosmart toner technology provides not just outstanding print quality but significant energy, and therefore cost savings. Copying Functionality - HP LaserJet Pro MFP M428FDN

The copying function of the HP LaserJet Pro MFP M428fdn uses a flatbed scanner which is mounted on the top of the printer. To meet a variety of user needs the scanner can be accessed directly by lifting the top. This allows bulky originals, such as bound volumes, to be copied. The flatbed measures 216 x 297mm. Alternatively, the integrated Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) can hold up to 50 sheets with a maximum dimension of 216 x 356 mm.

The size of the copy can be varied from the original by between +/- 25% and 400%. Up to 999 copies can be produced at a speed of 38 copies per minute with a resolution of 600 x 600 dots per inch (DPI) from both black or colour originals. Using the top-mounted 6.86 cm intuitive colour touchscreen functions such as number of copies; resize (including 2-Up), and quality (Draft/Normal/Best) are selected.

Simple & Flexible Scanning

Scanning is accessed the same way as copying; via the flatbed or the ADF with choices being made using the touchscreen. The scan file formats are as followed:

  • PDF Files
  • JPEG Files
  • TIFF Files

When using the M428 scanner, all file types deliver a resolution of 1200 x 1200 DPI and at a speed of up to 29 images per minute (IPM) from a black and white original. Additionally, when scanning colour, the M428 series delivers up to 20 image per minute. It will also convert colours to 256 grayscale where required. Using the front panel and selecting scan, the HP MFP M428 can scan to digital destinations. These include:

  • Email Addresses (Using LDAP)
  • Network Folders
  • USB Sticks
  • Microsoft Sharepoint
  • Software Loaded Computer Devices (TWAIN or WIA)

Fax Capabilities - HP LaserJet Pro MFP M428 Series

Many businesses still use fax for a variety of reasons. Unlike an email, the sender automatically receives confirmation of the entire document from the recipient. Furthermore, signatures can be sent that are not kept on a network where they may be vulnerable.

The HP LaserJet MFP M428fdn is the second model in the series and share identical specifications with the other model but adds a fax facility. With a transmission speed of 33.6 kbps it takes around 3 seconds to send an A4 page. The fax resolution is 203 x 196 dpi but can be enhanced to 300 x 300 dpi by enabling halftone reproduction. Up to 400 pages can be held in fax memory with up to 120 numbers held in fax speed dial. If a number is engaged or fails to answer when dialled it will be automatically redialled until a connection is established. Delayed sending is also available for those times when the fax needs to be kept available to receive.

Paper Handling

When it comes to printing for workgroups there are two major factors that can reduce productivity - frequently running out of paper and having to change paper sizes or types for different applications.

To minimise these interruptions the HP LaserJet Pro MFP M428 comes with two paper trays as standard. Tray 1 has a capacity of up to 100 sheets and tray 2 has a capacity of up to 250 sheets. Both trays are multi-adjustable across a wide range of sizes. Tray 1 can fit sizes from A4 down to A6 as well as other international sizes. It can also be adjusted to take standard envelope sizes such as:

  • B5 Envelopes.
  • C5 Envelopes.
  • DL Envelopes.

If that’s still not enough the tray is adjustable to take a wide range of unusual paper sizes. Still want more? It can be further adjusted to take any sheet size from 76.2 x 127 up to 215.9 x 355.6 mm. This tray can take many types of media with weights ranging from 60 to 200 grams per square metre (gsm).

The second standard paper tray has a capacity of up to 250 sheets, giving a standard capacity for this MFP of up to 350 sheets. Whilst it is slightly less versatile that Tray 1 it will take all the most frequently used sheet sizes and other sheet sizes within the range from 104.9 x 148.59 up to 215.9 x 355.6 mm. It will support media between the weights of 60 gsm and 120 gsm.

Still want even more? There is an optional third paper tray with a capacity of up to 550 sheets giving a total of 900 sheets. Each tray can take a different sheet size or weight or they can all be adjusted to take the same size sheet for minimal need to reload or for really long runs. This optional tray takes sheet sizes and media weights identical to those of tray 2.

The output tray has a maximum capacity of up to 150 sheets to handle the demands of a bust and expanding business.

Connectivity

Business growth calls for great connections and networking. So does productivity for a workgroup. A workgroup always consists of individuals who have different needs and different practices. The HP LaserJet Pro MFP M428 offers all the right connections to boost productivity for a workgroup. For those members of a workgroup who operate on a hardwired network, there is a Gigabit Ethernet connection. This does not meet the needs of all the members of a workgroup. Some prefer to work from notebooks, tablets or Smartphones. An Ethernet connection is not the best solution for them but wireless is the better answer.

To meet this demand the MFP includes a highly secure built-in dual-band Wi-Fi system. Others may prepare their work off-site and don’t want to bring in a notebook or tablet but something even more portable. To meet this requirement there is a HI-speed USB 2.0 at the rear as well as a read host USB. For quick access, there is a further USB port at the front. Mobile printing is also available through the following:

  • Apple AirPrint&trade
  • Google Cloud Print&trade
  • HP ePrint
  • HP Smart App
  • Mobile Apps
  • Mopria&trade

MFP M428 Series Security Features

Cyber attacks seem to be more and more prevalent these days doing billions of dollars in damage each year. Hackers will probe a network for vulnerabilities and exploit any security weaknesses that they find. Unless your printer is secure this is a potential access point to your network and valuable data. The HP LaserJet Pro MFP M428 has the highest level of security in its class.

Multiple layers of protection are included to keep the printer and your network secure. It starts with a secure bootup procedure, secure firmware integrity and secure runtime code integrity and password protected Embedded Web Server. Web browsing is secure with multiple protocols. Network protection is secured by disabling network ports and features when not in use and then enabling them when they are required. To restrict unauthorised access there are several layers of authentication required. It has its own firewall and an Access Control List (ACL), This is a list of which users have access to which file directory or even which individual files. The control panel is locked to anyone not authorised to have access to the MFP.

Power Efficiency

Obviously productivity is more than powering through as much work as possible. It is also about minimising operating costs. The HP LaserJet MFP M428 reduces these costs in a number of ways. With the inclusion of automatic double-sided printing, it significantly reduces paper costs, the speed reduces queuing time for multiple users, its connectivity eliminates the need for all users to be on a single network and the use of HP JetIntelligence Toner with its lower melt point helps to reduce the use of that increasingly expensive commodity, electricity.

This MFP uses just 510W when actively printing and 7.5W in the ready state, 0.9W with auto-off and 0.06W when switched off and on manually. This all adds up to a Typical Electricity Consumption (TEC) of less than 1.3KW/hours a week.

HP LaserJet Pro MFP M428 Series Conclusion

Whether it be the M428 FDN or the M428 FDW, the HP LaserJet Pro MFP M428 series offers big productivity within a very small space. Not only is the carbon footprint of the M428 printers low, the real-world footprint suits any home or office. Maximising your desk or bench space within the office is precious and a device that sprawls across the room is not ideal. At just 42cm wide and 39 deep, the HP LaserJet Pro MFP M428 series is your stealth assassin to effective printing.

With a footprint of 42 cm wide and 39 cm deep when in use it doesn’t take up much room. The height of the unit is just 32.3 cm. It will need a little extra height to lift the ADF to access the flatbed scanner. With all drawers open the maximum footprint is 43 cm wide and 63.4 cm deep.
